Paula Newsome hasn’t really changed. She still refuses to “let anybody put me in a box.” She still remains an advocate for the African-American community. She still does the unexpected and the unconventional. And she still loves her life. Newsome, who graduated with honors from UAB’s School of Optometry in 1981, is now in private practice in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Dr. Newsome is leaving her mark on the changing field of optometry, working side by side with three optometrists and an ophthalmologist, all of them happily thumbing their noses at the traditional turf battles between the two fields. It’s working, she says.
